A Cranial Remolding Orthosis (CRO) is a custom helmet prescribed to reshape an infant’s skull due to a flat spot on the head, known as Plagiocephaly. In some cases, an infant sleeping in the same position may result in an uneven shape.
The helmet is made from lightweight plastic with foam lining on the inside. As the helmet is worn, the heightened areas of the skull make contact to prevent growth while the flat areas have space to grow and form into. An infant’s skull has soft plates with spaces in between which allow it to re shape before fusing together at approximately one year of age.
Digital scanning is used to measure skull asymmetry and establish medical necessity for insurance qualifying guidelines. The quantitative data is also used to monitor the overall treatment outcomes.
Remolding helmets are prescribed for full time use daily and requires regular visits with the Orthotist to adjust the fit as the baby’s head shape changes. The helmet is worn approximately 3 months or longer depending on the severity of the deformity and the age of the baby. The Orthotist will work with the prescribing physician to establish overall treatment.
